Glyndwr's Way: A Hiking Bliss

Glyndwr's Way is one of the main walking trails in Wales and a top attraction in its own right. It was named in honour of Owain Glyndŵr, the Prince of Wales, who rebelled against King Henry IV of England in 1400. It stands as a testament to the rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural heritage that define the region. The trail is a popular destination all year round. If you like to see greenery and flowers in bloom, summer is a good time, but you should be careful about the heat. If you like snowy spectacles, then winter is the time for you, yet you should bring extra clothing.

Glyndŵr's Way is accessible to individuals with a reasonable level of fitness. It starts in Knighton and ends in Welshpool, and it takes around 9 days to complete. The hike could be difficult for some people as it passes through some challenging terrains and valleys and crosses a few rugged and isolated areas.

As the British weather is usually unpredictable, it is good to have suitable clothes and shoes. Have a guidebook or map with you, as well as a compass in case of foggy weather. There might be times on the trail when the internet and phone lines are not working so well. So try not to be so reliant on your phone and Wi-Fi until you get to an accommodation or cafe on the way.

Lake Vyrnwy is a breathtaking sight and a wonderful family attraction. From the lake, you can view the spectacular Berwyn Mountains, which surround it, and enjoy the serene open countryside and waterfalls. You may walk or cycle around it, or hire a boat to go to the middle of the lake.

The trail passes underneath Clywedog Reservoir, a man-made dam with a surface area of 615 acres. If you go to the viewing area above the dam, you can enjoy the spectacular views of the countryside. And if you go beneath it, you may spot plenty of rare wildlife, such as red kites and buzzards.

A little detour from the trail will take you to the highest point of the path, which is Foel Fadian. In fine weather, you may climb to the top and appreciate the full view of clear weather and the expansive valleys and lands underneath you.

Powis Castle is a mediaeval castle, originally dating back to the 13th century. It is a few minutes from Whirlpool and is now home to a collection of paintings and sculptures. Its gardens and terraces are another source of attraction for visitors. 

Glaslyn is one of the most peaceful places you can visit. It is a beautiful area with picnic sites and plenty of wildlife around. It is certainly worth visiting the reserve and its lake, especially in the summer when the heather flowers are in bloom. 

If you are travelling by air, the closest airport is Birmingham International Airport, which is 116 kilometres from Knighton. If you are going by train, there is a train station at both ends of the trail. The railway passing through Knighton is a link between Shrewsbury and Swansea, and the one passing through Welshpool connects Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli.

You may decide to take your own car, and in that case, you need to take some precautions. As you will be spending several days on the trail, it is recommended that you inform the local police or leave the car in the parking lot of your chosen accommodation.
